Important information for Members

Safeguarding

Pam de Gruchy is the Safeguarding Officer for the Jersey Bat Group (“JBG”), and if anyone has any problems or concerns then please contact her on 07797764857 or email enquiries@jerseybatgroup.org

JBG follow the same policy as BCT as regards safeguarding, Please see the BCT documents for information.

Insurance

JBG are insured with Ecclesiastical Insurance Office plc. for third party liability insurance.

Third Party Liability (also called Public Liability) refers to claims by a third party against JBG for injury or property damage caused by the group’s negligence.

To be eligible for the third party insurance then:

  • Those acting on behalf of the bat group must be doing so in a voluntary capacity, and in the full knowledge of other members of the group.
  • Event leaders must ensure that an appropriate risk assessment has been undertaken prior to the event, and that all others involved in the event are fully aware of relevant health and safety issues, to ensure the cover is valid.
  • Event leaders must ensure compliance with JBG’s safeguarding policy (see section on safeguarding above).

It must be noted that this policy does not include personal accident cover and nor does it cover loss or damage to equipment (personal or bat group).

Health and Safety

The Jersey Bat Group takes the health and safety of its members seriously.

You will find a copy of our Health and Safety Policy at the end of this section, along with example risk assessments for different types of event.  We commit to follow these basic risk assessments and will adopt the recommended ‘actions to reduce risks’ for the relevant event.

From time to time we will produce specific risk assessments for certain events when it is necessary to do so and these will be shared with participants prior to those events occurring.

If you see any health and safety concerns at any of our events, please do not hesitate to raise them with us to help us.

Lone Working

As a standard principle we do not believe in loan working forJBG members and this is to be discouraged at all possible times.  It is best practice to avoid lone working where ever possible.

We will not condone lone working when the risks of the work being undertaken is high to either humans or bats (such as night time transects or when trapping bats).

There may be times, when working on a site in a group whereby a person may be alone for short periods of time.  You will either be provided with a radio, or we will request your mobile phone number to be able to contact you.

Please do not leave the site without telling the person in charge else they may contact you on your mobile, and if they can not contact you may contact the emergency services out of concern for your welfare.

If you are currently undertaking activities alone (house visits, emergence surveys) then please do check with the JBG Committee to ensure what the relevant loan working controls would be.
