Home > Capture & Release
The Jersey Bat Group uses capture and release methods to study and protect local bat species. Using safe, humane techniques like harp traps, we collect vital information about bat populations, health, and behavior. Each bat is handled with care, checked, and released back to its original habitat quickly to minimize stress. These activities help us monitor conservation progress and ensure Jersey’s bats thrive for generations to come.
In May 2026 we managed to capture a Rhinolophus ferrumequinum (Greater Horseshoe Bat) in one of our nets for the first time since a birder accidentally caught one in his mist net in the 1050s.
Working to protect and conserve Jersey’s native bat species through research, education, and community involvement.
